Paul-André Babin

I started painting at the age of 11 under the influence of my father. In 1977, I achieved my Bachelor of Visual Arts degree, and I have been producing works constantly since then. I’ve participated in more than 50 group exhibits and 19 solo exhibits in New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Quebec and France.

Since the 1990s, I’ve been working spontaneously and gesturally. Freedom of expression and inner emptiness are the forces behind my inspiration. I mix different construction products with my colours: epoxy, polyurethane or polymers. I try to distance the product from its intended purpose. That obviously creates surprises. Textures, colours and reflections capture movements and atmospheres. I especially appreciate the reflection that one gets from epoxy, since it gives us a reflection of ourselves, as a voyeur. I believe a work serves as a window to the soul.

I am currently working on the theme of nature constantly struggling to survive against the assault of man. Birds, a frequent element in my works, represent man, as he always seems to be able to fly higher and to flourish.
