2026 Budget: Building tomorrow with responsible choices

Shediac (NB) – At its November 3 meeting, Shediac Municipal Council adopted its 2026 budget, focusing on stability and financial responsibility. The base tax rate for the former territory of Shediac remains at $1.4334 per $100 of assessment, reflecting the council’s commitment to a prudent approach.

In accordance with the adjustment plan established by the province during the 2023 amalgamation, a slight increase of $0.05 will be applied in 2026 for the territories of Pointe-du-Chêne, Scoudouc, and Shediac Cape.

“Last year, the Town of Shediac took over weekly waste collection in the new wards while ensuring safety and quality of life through the management of municipal by-laws, such as animal control and the maintenance of dangerous or unsightly areas,” said Mayor Roger Caissie. “We will continue to expand our services and strengthen our regulations to meet residents’ needs.”

The base tax rates for 2026 will be $0.5731 per $100 of assessment in Pointe-du-Chêne and $0.5581 in the neighborhoods of Scoudouc, Scoudouc Road, and Shediac Cape.

Concrete Projects for Our Communities

In 2025, the Town multiplied initiatives to strengthen ties with associations and institutions in the new neighborhoods:

  • Scoudouc: Development of a playground behind the Club d’âge d’or.
  • Pointe-du-Chêne: Shared maintenance services with the Recreation and Community Center and a substantial donation of $230,000 to support the tourism attraction of the Pointe-du-Chêne Wharf.
  • Shediac Cape: Support for the school through fundraising campaigns and the implementation of a crossing guard for student safety.

“Our teams work hand in hand with citizens and associations,” added Mayor Caissie. “This collaborative approach will continue in 2026 to build a dynamic and inclusive community.”

The council also approved an increase in the non-residential ratio from 1.5% to 1.7%, applicable to commercial and heavy industrial zones. The operating budget for 2026 totals $27.5 million, with the Town’s actual mandate amounting to just over $25 million.

During the November 3 public meeting, the council also approved an increase in the water service fee, which will rise to $395 per unit per year. A discount of $36 will be offered to users who pay their bill by March 31, 2026.

Infrastructure Projects to Support Growth

In 2025, the council adopted the 2025–2027 Strategic and Operational Plan, which sets priorities for this period. Several projects from this plan have been confirmed for 2026 to modernize infrastructure and improve traffic flow in the town. Key initiatives include:

  • Phase 2 of the Breaux Bridge Street extension, extending this main artery to Ohio Road, with completion expected in 2026.
  • Construction of a new main trunk sewer line.
  • Upgrades to the drinking water filtration system at the town’s water treatment facility.
  • Improvements to municipal parks and the Festival Arena, to provide more welcoming spaces.
  • Planning for the new recreation center, with nearly $500,000 allocated in the budget to advance this major project.

“Last year, the Town of Shediac consulted residents to learn their vision for the future recreation center,” said Mayor Caissie. “In 2026, the council and administration will continue laying the groundwork to ensure that building and operating this new facility is feasible for the community.”
